Environmental activists protesting rising truck traffic and air pollution snarled key highways across Austria on Wednesday, the last of three days of actions aimed at reducing smog and congestion in the Alpine country.

Demonstrators walked and cycled on major highways in nearly every Austrian province to protest steadily rising truck traffic. Austria has become a key transit country for truckers bound for neighboring Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Slovakia and Slovenia.

Experts predict that truck traffic in the country, which depends heavily on Alpine tourism, will increase by 50 percent by 2015.
