(Tufts Daily) (U-WIRE) MEDFORD, Mass. -- In New York City, people flock to Canal Street to peruse racks of imitation Louis Vuitton, Kate Spade, Gucci, and Coach merchandise.

But the phenomenon of designer knockoffs is not limited to the Big Apple. Instead of paying $300 for a Coach handbag, many people -- including Tufts University students -- will choose to purchase a $30 replica.

"I don't specifically look for them," sophomore Heather Tamarkin said. "But if I see something, and it's a good knockoff, I'll buy it. I guess brands aren't that important to me. I'll buy a $10 skirt in Wet Seal or a $100 shirt in Guess. I've done both within the past ...
