DOD: Security forces disappoint in Iraq

WASHINGTON, Apr 12, 2004 (United Press International via COMTEX) -- U.S. military officials say a large portion of the newly minted Iraqi security forces refused to fight, abandoned their posts or joined the adversary in battles around Iraq in the last two weeks.

The Bush administration was banking on indigenous security forces to make Iraq safe and to relieve U.S. forces from their policing burden. Pentagon and White House officials have proudly pointed out they have recruited and trained some 200,000 police, soldiers and civil defense forces in less than a year.
