MONTEVIDEO, Apr. 12 (IPS/GIN) -- Despite the lack of a
scientific basis for practices like routine episiotomy, enemas and
perineal shaving, they continue to be used in maternity hospitals
throughout much of Latin America.
Unnecessary c-sections are also common, while hospitals
routinely prohibit women from being accompanied in often
overcrowded labour rooms and during delivery by their husbands or
another companion of their choice.
