Brazilian army won't help out in Rio

SAO PAULO, Apr 14, 2004 (United Press International via COMTEX) -- The Brazilian army will not step in to help authorities in Rio combat the violence plaguing the seaside city in recent days, as a rash of drug-related killings claimed two more lives on Wednesday.

State Secretary for Security Anthony Garotinho asked for the deployment of 4,000 troops, specifying they should come from the ranks of Brazil's Marines or Special Forces.

The request for certain typed of troops to help combat the recent spike in violence in some of the city's "favelas," or slums, however, appeared to irritate Justice Department officials.
