Police have detained 47 people following an attack by mainland Turkish nationalists on Turkish Cypriots supporters of the "Yes" vote in the coming referendum on reunification, the Turkish Cypriot interior minister said Wednesday.
More than 500 Turkish Cypriots protested the Tuesday night assault in a demonstration here Wednesday, waving banners that accused the assailants of being fascists and calling for the resignation of Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, a leader of the "No" vote campaign against the U.N. plan for Cyprus' reunification.
"Denktash's dogs cannot scare us," the crowd chanted.
