The Turkish Cypriot premier urged the European Union to temporarily suspend Cyprus' EU membership, while the European body pledged financial aid to angry Turkish Cypriots as the fallout from the Greek Cypriot rejection of a U.N. reunification plan continued Monday.

Mehmet Ali Talat told Turkish Cypriot news agency TAK that he wrote to Irish Prime Minister Bertie Ahern _ whose country holds the rotating EU presidency _ asking that EU laws not apply to the Greek Cypriot south until the island is reunified.
