Less paid leave for poor parents

WASHINGTON, Apr 28, 2004 (United Press International via COMTEX) -- Tina Orth of Milwaukee has had to take her daughter to work when she was sick, and was told to just get "sick child care."

"I've had employers tell me that I needed to choose if I wanted to work or 'be a mom,' Orth said.

Santina Story of Atlanta has fought to keep jobs while taking care of her infant son who has chronic asthma.

"My supervisor's attitude was, if you can't be here every day, then you must not need this job," Story said.

Many working parents have to make such unpleasant choices, according to a recently-released report by the Urban Institute. ...
