Farmers to get up to $25,000 each as part of rescue package

Australia's sugar farmers will receive up to $25,000 each as part of $444 million federal
industry rescue package announced today.

About 7,000 farmers -- most in a handful of marginal government held seats in Queensland
-- stand to benefit from the package unveiled by Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD in the sugar
processing town of Bundaberg.

Farmers and the sugar milling industry have largely welcomed the package, but a national
organisation warns it will only provide short term relief.
