Suddenly, Asbury Park has cachet. And it has nothing to do with Bruce Springsteen. Drawn by its seaside setting, shabby-chic charm and liberal local government, gay couples from New York and elsewhere are buying homes and opening businesses in the gritty city where rock star Springsteen rose to fame in the 1970s.

Rainbow flags fly from restored Victorians. There's a "gay bowling" night at Asbury Lanes, a gay pride weekend and an annual "road trip" sponsored by the Gay and Lesbian Homeowners Association that tries to show off Asbury Park (population 16,930) to potential residents and entrepreneurs.
