NEW DELHI, May 4, 2004 (IPS/GIN) -- The Indian Navy's
restoration of the red-on-white Cross of St. George to its ensign,
three years after abandoning the emblem of Britain's patron saint
for its "demeaning" colonial associations, has rekindled debates
about old colonial habits that remain a part of daily life today.
The new ensign, unveiled by Indian President A P J Abdul Kalam
in April, replaces the blue-and-white version that senior officials
admitted was "lacklustre" and poorly visible at sea.
Introduced on Independence Day in August 2001, the
"non-colonial" ensign had the Indian flag in the top left quadrant
and the navy's crest ...
