A Chilean appellate court opened hearings Thursday on a new request to try former dictator Gen. Augusto Pinochet for alleged human rights abuses during his 1973-90 regime.
Human rights lawyers urged the court to try Pinochet in connection with the deaths of several Chileans in the so-called "Operation Condor," a repression plan implemented by the military dictatorships that ruled South America's southern cone nations in the 1970s and 1980s.
But prospects for the 88-year-old Pinochet ever facing trial remain dim after the Supreme Court ruled in 2002 that he was mentally and physically unfit to stand ...
