President Hipolito Mejia is campaigning for re-election by drawing on his image as a man of the people, despite growing unrest from the poor who have paid the highest price during the nation's worst economic crisis in decades.

The affluent farmer-turned-president hopes to win a second term Sunday in a race that he says is a battle between rich and poor. Mejia says fellow contender and former President Leonel Fernandez is out to protect the rich, and treats the poor like criminals.
