INTERNET protocol version 6 (IPv6) is the next-generation protocol designed by the Internet Engineering Task Force to replace the current version of Internet protocol version 4 (IPv4).

Though IPv4 has been remarkably resilient despite being 20 years old, there is a growing shortage of IPv4 addresses which are needed by all new machines and devices connecting to the Internet.
As the IPv4 address exhaustion is predicted to occur between 2005 and 2011, IPv6 is expected to fix a number of problems in IPv4 and add improvements to cater to the Internet of the future.
