TAS: Moves afoot to protect Overland Track amid tourism increase

HOBART, May 31 AAP - Moves are afoot to limit the number of bushwalkers traversing
Tasmania's premier long-haul wilderness track.
The Tasmanian government today unveiled plans to tackle overcrowding and degradation
on the Overland Track, which passes through high plains, rainforest and button grass in
the Cradle Mountain and Lake St Clair National Park.
The 65km route attracts some 9,000 visitors annually, about 85 per cent hailing from
interstate and overseas.
About 7,000 of these travel during the peak season from October to March.
