Suriname's currency for more 200 years is being taken out of circulation Tuesday, completing the South American country's transition from the guilder to the Suriname dollar.

The dollar, introduced in January, is holding steady at 2.75 against U.S. dollar at the close of a five-month phase-out of the massively devalued guilder.

The guilder, introduced by Dutch colonizers more than two centuries ago, bombed in the last two decades, devaluing from 1.8 against the U.S. dollar in the 1980s to a low of 2,750 against the dollar in 2003.
