What I best remember about Hebrew school was how much I hated to carpool
with my neighbor, David Cohen. The only class I liked was Cantor Goodman's,
where we learned the prayers for Shabbat services. Other than that, Hebrew
school in suburban Chicago in the 1970s was, for me, a blur of passing
notes to friends, giggling and gossip.

Meanwhile, the range of Jewish customs and practices I never learned about
is astonishing.

"Our Family" asked several of Cleveland's top Jewish educators what today's
parents can do to make supplementary religious school a more effective and
a more pleasurable experience for their children. Their suggestions follow.
