New South Wales wants to hire former Zimbabwe cricket skipper Heath Streak to fill a void created by the retirements of former Australian internationals Stephen and Mark Waugh and Michael Slater.

Cricket New South Wales chief executive David Gilbert on Wednesday said he was "very interested" in signing 30-year-old Streak, who was fired by Zimbabwe administrators because of his demands for changes to what he called racially-based selection policies.

"Streak is certainly somebody we're very interested in from the point of view that our senior player influence has been massively eroded in the last couple of months," Gilbert said.
