Fed: Lifting MRET would cost consumers too much: Kemp

CANBERRA, June 15 AAP - The federal government today refused to boost its national
target for the use of clean and green energy.

Environment Minister David Kemp said the government had rejected a recommendation to
increase the Mandatory Renewable Energy Target (MRET) because it would cost consumers
too much.

A review headed by former coalition senator Grant Tambling backed raising the MRET
from the current 9,500 gigawatts per year to 20,000 gwt per year by 2020.

Labor and some renewable energy groups had demanded an increase in the target, to help
