SINN Fein's days of raising funds in the U.S. appear to be numbered. Last
week, Northern Ireland Office minister John Spellar said he expected the
exemption which allows Northern political parties to raise funds abroad to
end. The exemption in the law expires next February.

Spellar said that the current situation was open to abuse, though some Sinn
Fein officials charged they were being unfairly targeted.

Sinn Fein chairman Mitchel McLaughlin was quoted as saying that the British
government was making a "direct attack" on Sinn Fein.

Sinn Fein leaders in the U.S., meanwhile, told the Irish Voice they were
waiting to see how the situation would develop.
