Membership in Britain's governing Labour Party last year fell to its lowest level since its landslide election victory in 1997, officials said Tuesday.

The party's annual accounts showed that at the end of December 2003, Labour membership stood at 214,952, more than 30,000 less that the previous year and well below the 407,000 peak at the 1997 general election.

Campaigners in the Save the Labour Party group believe it could be the lowest membership total at any time since Ramsay MacDonald was leader in the 1930s.
