SA: Guantanamo Bay should be closed, say Australian Democrats
ADELAIDE, July 2 AAP - Guantanamo Bay should be closed and its two Australian detainees
returned home, the Australian Democrats said today.
Democrats foreign affairs spokeswoman Natasha Stott Despoja said the US should close
its base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, following a US Supreme Court ruling this week.
The court ruled the 600 terror suspects from 42 countries, including Australians David
Hicks and Mamdouh Habib, being held by the US at Guantanamo Bay could contest their detention
in US courts.
Previously, the US had maintained Guantanamo Bay was outside the jurisdiction of US courts.
