The United States may soon release a Swedish citizen being held in the American naval base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, Sweden's prime minister suggested in an interview Tuesday without offering an exact date.

"I would be surprised if this case _ meaning that he will be allowed to leave Guantanamo _ is not settled within the very near future," Prime Minister Goeran Persson told Swedish public television.

The suspect, Mehdi-Muhammed Ghezali, was arrested in Pakistan in 2001 and is among some 600 foreigners being held at Guantanamo Bay on suspicion of being members of al-Qaida or Taliban fighters.
