Rwandans destroy mountain gorilla habitat

VIRUNGA NATIONAL PARK, Democratic Republic of Congo, Jul 06, 2004 (United Press International via COMTEX) -- Nearly 6,000 farmers have moved into Virunga National Park in less than a month, deforesting 6 square miles of one of only two mountain gorilla habitats.

The park is home to over half of the world's 700 mountain gorillas, and the Wildlife Conservation Society reports people -- mostly from Rwanda -- are moving in and destroying the forested ecosystem, a development that offsets reports earlier this year the mountain gorilla population had risen 17 percent.
