Article: EU proposes aid, trade to free Turkish Cypriots from isolation

The EU head office on Wednesday proposed trade and aid benefits for Turkish Cypriots to reward them for voting for their island's reunification in an April referendum and free them from international isolation.

The package includes euro259 million (US$318 million) in aid for the 2004-2006 period, plus trade benefits to boost the destitute economy of the island's Turkish northern half.

The aid includes funds to make Turkish Cypriot legislation compatible with EU law, finance reconciliation, confidence-building and social programs as well as roadways and other public works.
