The seats are still missing, plaster dust coats the crimson, silk-covered walls of the spectator boxes and wires poke out from everywhere. But La Scala's renovation, which has shut down the hallowed hall of opera since December 2001, is going better than predicted, theater officials say.
Taking foreign correspondents on a tour Thursday, La Scala and city officials insisted that the theater will be ready as promised for opening night on Dec. 7, the traditional annual gala appointment. They boasted that some phases of the overhaul were even running ahead of schedule.
