MANUFACTURING is Malaysia's top foreign currency earner, followed by tourism and palm oil. Though occupying third place, Malaysia nevertheless accounts for 51 per cent of world palm oil production and 62 per cent of world exports; also for eight per cent and 22 per cent of total global production and exports of oils and fats.
Unlike rubber, however, oil palm has not been given an important place in school textbooks. Even university undergraduates know little about its development in the country.
