I'm Madeleine Band in Los Angeles, and this is DAY TO DAY.

Last week, the Federal Reserve hiked interest rates for the first time in four years, and that led many people to speculate that the housing market could be hit by rising mortgage rates. But, surprise, mortgage rates actually dropped last week, and that sparked a flurry of new applications for mortgages. Joining us from the "Marketplace" newsroom in Los Angeles is Tess Vigeland.
