More scrap tires finding new uses

WASHINGTON, Jul 21, 2004 (United Press International via COMTEX) -- Eighty percent of scrap tires in the United States found new end-use markets in 2003, up from 11 percent in 1990, an industry report said Wednesday.

In 2003, 233 of 290 million tires went to an end-use market, compared to only 32 million in 1990, a Rubber Manufacturers Association report said. Markets for the used tires include civil engineering, ground-rubber products and fuel derived from tires.

Scrap tire stockpiles have also been reduced by almost 75 percent since 1990, the report said.
