Brazil is establishing a national security force to handle emergencies, the justice minister told a newspaper Sunday, apparently to help state police that have had difficulty handling gang-related violence.
Starting Aug. 10, the government will train an initial 270 people in a federal police academy, Marcio Thomaz Bastos told O Globo newspaper. By the year's end, the government expects to have a force of 1,500 ready.
"They will be called upon in emergencies. The first two targets of the force will likely be put into practice at the end of the year," Bastos said without further elaborating.
