Sharper Image Corp. and the publisher of Consumer Reports squared off in federal court here Friday, with the specialty retailer accusing the magazine's owner of publishing false and malicious articles about its Ionic Breeze Quadra Silent Air Purifier.

Consumers Union, which publishes Consumer Reports, urged the judge to dismiss the case, standing by its published report that "found almost no measurable reduction in airborne particles" for the device. More than two million of the $350 units have been sold.
