Last month, many in the Native American community were shocked to hear that
Darrell "Chip" Wadena, the former White Earth chairman convicted of 15
felonies, was again running for chairman. That is, everyone but the
majority of voters who turned out to vote him into first place in the
primary on the White Earth Reservation.

The March 30 vote left Wadena up against past rival Dr. Erma Vizenor.
[Current chairman Doyle Turner came in third; only the top two vote getters
continue on to the June 8 election].

After 22 years in White Earth tribal politics, including five terms as
chairman, Wadena was charged with, among others, bid rigging, embezzlement
and vote fraud, ...
