Fed: Breakthrough holds promise for asthma cure

SYDNEY, Aug 5 AAP - A protein produced by muscle cells in human airways could be the
key to a cure for asthma, Sydney scientists said.
Researchers at the Woolcock Institute of Medical Research have made a major breakthrough
in asthma research with the discovery that the muscle cells of asthmatics fail to produce
the protein known as C/EBP-alpha, cell biologist Professor Michael Roth said today.
"About two years ago we discovered that the smooth muscle cells from the airways of
asthmatics ... grow faster than the cells from non-asthmatics," he said.
