For Immediate Release August 5, 2004 Congress Approves Law Enforcement
Officers Safety Act Legislation to allow off-duty and retired law enforcement
officers to protect themselves and protect public safety was recently approved
by both houses of Congress. This important measure, known as the Law Enforcement
Officers Safety Act, was signed into law by the President on July 22, 2004.
The Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act allows current and qualified retired
police officers to carry concealed firearms in any of the 50 states. Prior
to the enactment of this law, some states did not permit a law enforcement
