Hurricane Charley swirled toward Jamaica and the Cayman Islands on Wednesday, bringing black storm clouds, rain and winds as residents scurried to supermarkets to stock up on batteries, flashlights and drinking water.

Forecasters upgraded Charley when its winds reached 75 mph (120 kph), according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami. At 2 p.m. (1800 GMT), Charley's center was located 90 miles (145 kilometers) south of Kingston, Jamaica.

A hurricane watch was in effect for all of Jamaica and the storm's extended winds were expected to brush the island's southern coast later Wednesday ...
