Hurricane Charley swirled near Jamaica on its way to the Cayman Islands and Cuba, bringing thunder, rain and winds Wednesday as residents scurried to supermarkets to stock up on batteries, flashlights and drinking water.

Forecasters upgraded Charley when its winds reached 75 mph (120 kph), according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami. At 5 p.m. (2100 GMT), Charley's center was located 85 miles (137 kilometers) southwest of Kingston, Jamaica.
