Russia on Wednesday dismissed Georgia's call for Western mediation of the conflict in separatist South Ossetia, where nightly gunfire has stoked fears of a new war in the volatile Caucasus Mountains, and Russian President Vladimir Putin reiterated Moscow's support for Georgia's territorial integrity.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov criticized Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili's appeal for world leaders to convene an international conference on the escalating conflict in South Ossetia and deploy Western peacekeepers in the breakaway Georgian region.
