SA: Research finds link between immune system and pain control
ADELAIDE, Aug 22 AAP - A discovery about the role the immune system plays in dulling
pain could lead to new methods of preventing and controlling it, a University of Adelaide
researcher said today.
Mark Hutchinson, an affiliate lecturer at the university's biology department, said
the brain and nerves had traditionally been known to control pain signalling, but his
research looked at the part played by the immune system.
He said it led to a blood test which used morphine to produce a response in collected
immune cells which could be used to predict a person's tolerance to pain.
