Researchers Work on Predicting Rainfall

University of Arizona researchers are trying to determine how much rain to expect based on how often lightning strikes.

The researchers already have come up with quotients for small-scale storms in Florida and large-scale storms in the Midwest. Now they're working on the relationship between lightning and rainfall in Arizona by using data from a local company that specializes in lightning detection.

"We expect to see something different here, because the storms we have tend to be higher and the air itself tends to be drier," said E. Philip Krider, a UA atmospheric scientist. "We'd expect to see more evaporation before the rain hits the ground."
