The standoff around the southern Iraqi city of Najaf continued today despite claims from the Iraqi interim government that a rebel Shiite militia had surrendered a sacred shrine to Iraqi government forces. Iraqi officials have since withdrawn those claims, and the US military says siegelike conditions are still in effect in the city. NPR's Ivan Watson reports from Baghdad.
