Controversy on King license plate

Broward County resident and business man John Gethers was thrilled and
happy to learn about the fact that the Florida legislature authorized the
issuance of a Martin Luther King Jr. license plate. But what shocked
Gethers was the fact that he felt he had a copyright on the design of the
depiction of King on the license plate. He did not accuse anyone of
stealing his idea, but he wondered how the state was able to come up with a
design that he felt he already had approved by the U. S. Copyright Office.

Gethers started his Keepers of the Dream Foundation in 1988. The foundation
was started to promote safety for families in buildings with burglar bars
