One-time disco demon John Travolta attempted a monumentally acrobatic move in a movie screened at the Venice Film Festival on Thursday, stretching his talents to play an irascible, boozing southerner in "A Love Song for Bobby Long."

He grabs a guitar and wails out folksy southern ballads. He hobbles around on a rotting toe, quoting poetry. He even has his hair dyed white for the role.

"We're admitting to our age finally, huh?" the 50-year-old actor joked, when asked if there was a trend in the silvery locks worn by him _ and by Tom Cruise in another film at Venice, "Collateral."
