Authorities are seeking to reopen an investigation into whether Brazilian Vice President Jose Alencar committed fraud through a series of stock trades in a textile company, an aide to Alencar confirmed Friday.
Alencar, a wealthy textile magnate, was surprised to hear of the new probe into the 1998 trades because the case was investigated years ago with no finding of wrongdoing, said his press secretary, Paulo Cotta.
"He was surprised, but he's not worried because it's an old case that has already been cleared up," Cotta told the Associated Press in an interview.
