A pair of powerful earthquakes struck western Japan on Sunday, rattling several major cities and triggering tsunami waves. At least nine people were injured, news reports said, but no damage was immediately reported.
A 6.9-magnitude quake hit western Japan shortly after 7 p.m. (1000 GMT), followed five hours later by a more powerful 7.3-magnitude temblor, the Meteorological Agency said.
The quakes were felt most strongly in sparsely populated areas of Wakayama prefecture (state) about 450 kilometers (280 miles) west of Tokyo. But they also shook the major cities of Osaka, Kyoto and Nagoya, and caused buildings to ...
