Unions vow to limit Alitalia cuts

A day after Alitalia said it would cut 5,000 jobs, a quarter of its work force, unions regrouped, vowing Tuesday to limit the layoffs through methods that ranged from continuing negotiations with the management of the state-run airline to hunger strikes. The unions all blamed management for the dire financial situation of Alitalia, which has had an operating loss for five straight years and risks running out of funds at the end of the month. The biggest unions were the most conciliatory, indicating there may be room for Giancarlo Cimoli, Alitalia's chief executive, to negotiate a final settlement.
