Dresden's royal treasure chamber reopens

DRESDEN, Germany, Sep 09, 2004 (United Press International via COMTEX) -- The Green Vault, the treasure chest of the Saxon royal dynasty that was bomb damaged in World War II, reopened Wednesday at the restored royal palace.

On display is a glittering array of gold and silver objects embellished with precious stones from the Renaissance to the Rococo period.

Most of the collection begun by the Elector Augustus I of Saxony in the 16th century and reorganized by Augustus the Strong, who was also King of Poland, in the 18th century were taken to the Soviet Union during the war but returned to Dresden in the late ...
