Dateline: SAN PEDRO DE MACORIS, Dominican Republic
Tropical Storm Jeanne battered the Dominican Republic but just sideswiped the Bahamas as it lurched northward Sunday packing winds up to 45 mph (75 kph).
Blamed for at least nine deaths, Jeanne lost strength as it drove thousands of Dominicans from their homes late Friday. But a few hours after being downgraded to a tropical depression, it strengthened Saturday again into a tropical storm with lashing winds.
Forecasters said Jeanne could increase in strength Sunday. It was too soon to predict if the storm would hit the United States.
