Los Angeles votes to close inner-city trauma unit
LOS ANGELES, Sep 22, 2004 (United Press International via COMTEX) -- Officials in Los Angeles voted Tuesday to formally move toward a shutdown of the busy trauma center at the troubled county hospital that is darkly nicknamed "The Knife and Gun Club" and serves the low-income and often violent neighborhoods known as South LA.
The proposed closure of the trauma unit at Martin Luther King/Drew Medical Center in the Willowbrook district is aimed at allowing the entire hospital to regroup and stem a feared collapse and entire loss of accreditation at the overworked facility.
