Ellis Burks plans to announce his retirement after this season. First, the 18-year veteran wants to help the Boston Red Sox win a few more games.

The 40-year-old outfielder-designated hitter was activated Thursday after nearly five months on the disabled list, two operations on his left knee and a steady rehabilitation to get him in shape to play. He singled as a pinch-hitter in the bottom of the ninth and was removed for a pinch-runner to a standing ovation.

But the Red Sox couldn't erase Baltimore's lead and lost 9-7.

"At the end of the season it's going to be definite," he said of his retirement. "I'll announce it."
