Two Abu Sayyaf leaders wanted by Washington escaped from a series of assaults by U.S.-trained forces in clashes that killed a marine and wounded an undetermined number of rebels in the southern Philippines, officials said Wednesday.
Radulan Sahiron, his son Ismin, and dozens of their followers eluded army and marine forces who assaulted their encampments in the mountainous jungles of Patikul, on Jolo island, from Friday to late Monday, said army Brig. Gen. Agustin Demaala, who helped supervise the operations.
